DRiV Workshop Builds Trust, Improves Collaboration

“We have used different HR assessments and tools in the past with our Central Division Leadership Team; we were looking for something different and unique,” says Chuck Watts, Human Resources Director with Commercial Metals Company (CMC) in Irving, Texas. This 11- member team oversees approximately 3,000 employees, or nearly one-third of CMC’s total global employment.

To strengthen relationships and teamwork among this leadership team, CMC decided to leverage a DRiV workshop facilitated by Leadership Worth Following (LWF) because Watts said their HR department had a good experience with it the prior year.

As the first step, team members each took the 20-minute DRiV assessment to discover what drives and drains them in their work. LWF consultants then led team-building exercises to help members get to know each other and their new leader on a deeper level. Team members each shared a timeline of their personal leadership journey, charting their career path’s highs and lows.

At that first meeting, the LWF facilitator also asked if they were a team or a group? Did they share the same vision? Watts says those questions prompted a very powerful discussion.

He believes this LWF-led sharing session set the stage for this team’s future progress. Six months later, LWF facilitated additional steps in the DRiV team workshop, including discussing collective team-level results and pairwise speed relating. In this latter exercise, two colleagues overlay their DRiV results to see areas of similarities and differences; the process is repeated through all possible 1:1 colleague combinations.

According to Watts, this team now collaborates more, reaching out to each other “across the swim lane” to ask for feedback, support, or help. When comparing the DRiV to other assessments, Watts considers it “much more advanced and deeper.” He heard many other CMC participants echo his opinion. “We will continue using other tools, but the DRiV helps us take the next step, to a different level.”
